ABOUT US
The
Department of Medical Entomology at Westmead
Hospital is a joint
facility of the University
of Sydney and the Institute
of Clinical Pathology
and Medical Research (ICPMR). The Department is part of the
Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Laboratory Services
(CIDMLS) and is the only Hospital/Academic Department of Medical
Entomology anywhere in Australia.
The Medical Entomology Laboratory
is the only National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)
accredited laboratory of its type in Australia,
and in fact the first NATA accredited Entomology facility in
all Australia. The Department is the conferred NSW state and
the de facto Australian
national reference laboratory for medical and public health
entomology.
Bed Bug Research & Activities
Over
recent years, the Department has been at the forefront of documenting
the resurgence of Bed Bugs in Australia, and has produced a
number of publications for the scientific & pest control
communities (see 'Bed Bug Articles'), as
well as lecturing on Bed Bugs and their control to organisations
such as pest managers, pesticide industries, environmental health
officers, hotel maintenance staff, the accommodation industry
and the armed forces, to name a few. The Department has the
only Bed Bug colonies in Australia, which are available for
research and control purposes (on a cost recovery basis).
