| NSW Arbovirus Surveillance & Vector Monitoring Program |
2001 - 2002
Annual Report ![]() |
Methods. Only
mosquitoes collected from the inland, from some Sydney sites and from Batemans Bay (for
one week only), were processed for viruses. Virus isolation methods were as per earlier
annual reports (Doggett et al., 1999a, 2000).
Assays were used to identify any suspected viral isolate, and can identify the
alphaviruses - Barmah Forest (BF), Ross River (RR) and Sindbis (SIN), and the flaviviruses
- MVE, Kunjin (KUN), Alfuy (ALF), Edge Hill (EH), Kokobera (KOK) and Stratford (STR). Any
isolate that was not identified by the assays was labelled as 'unknown'.
Positive results were sent to Dr Jeremy McAnulty of the AIDS and Infectious Disease Branch, NSW Health, and to the relevant Public Health Unit, and posted on the NSW Arbovirus Surveillance Web Site (under Mosquito/Chicken Results) and under each location.
Results. Of the
mosquitoes processed, there were 29 viral isolates. These are listed in Table 1.

*Homebush is not part of the
surveillance program, but is included for it provides valuable information on virus
activity in Sydney.
