Why Tide Heights?

The major vector of arboviruses along coastal New South Wales is the saltmarsh mosquito, Aedes vigilax. This mosquito breeds in temporary, brackish groundpools on mudflats, often near mangroves. These temporary pools are formed after inundation by very high tides, usually those above 1.8 metres (although this height varies considerably between locations). Local rain, flooding, wind and other atmospheric conditions can cause the pools to flood and initiate larval hatching. However, monitoring tidal heights, will provide information on likely adult activity of Aedes vigilax. Note that these are PREDICTED heights and actual heights can vary by as much as 0.3m.
